SWS: What is your favorite room?

by Susan

It’s been one month now with the house on the market. I would by lying if I said I wasn’t on edge about it. Between keeping it clean and staying nearby just incase I have to swoop up the dogs for a showing… it’s just high stress. Add to it that we have not had ONE SINGLE SHOWING! I’m not blaming my realtor one bit. She’s a rockstar. She is also my mom and is also not taking a commission if when the house finally sells. I blame the weather. We have either had snow on the ground or temps below 40 every day this month. Only crazy people buy houses in this weather. Albeit I’m totally okay with selling to anyone, crazy or not.

With the lack of interest the world has shown in our home… it has forced me to ponder the “What if’s” of staying. I quickly realized that NONE of these rooms are my favorites. None of them are ideally designed (for me.) None of them are sunny (enough for me.)

The sales person in me is kicking myself for that paragraph, while the marketing person in me is saying add this fine print: This is a perfect home, open floor plan, 5 bedrooms, upstairs AND downstairs master bedrooms… This house is perfect for someone. You should totally buy it tomorrow.

I started wondering how other people felt about their homes… and of course, since it is “Say What Saturday” I asked my sponsors what their favorite room is in their homes.

2 cats & chloe: Grey Master Bedroom

As of right now, if I was forced to pick my favorite room of the house, I would probably have to go with our master bedroom on a clean day. I love the grey and teal tones I used to decorate it. But even more so, I love just laying in bed and watching netflix. I feel so much more at peace with binge watching television when I’m in my bed rather than on the couch.

So tell me, what is YOUR favorite room in your home? Happy Saturday Y’all!

Dining Room Decor: Glam & Chic

by Susan

Hello lovely readers of 2 Cats and Chloe. My name is Dagmara and I write a lifestyle blog focused around home décor named Glamista Home. Susan has been so kind to let me take over her blog for the day. Today I wanted to share with you how I solved the problem of small dining room space.

When we first moved to our current apartment we had a long brown table that could comfortable fit 4+ people. The table was great there was only one problem the space looked really cramped.

Dining Room Decorations

I didn’t enjoy sitting at the table and started to feel claustrophobic. On one side there was the kitchen bar, on the other the bedroom door. I really don’t like to sit in the walk path. Something about that just doesn’t sit right with me (pardon the pun) Are you the same way and do not like sitting what feels like the major traffic area?

So, it was clear a new table has to come in. After a long back and forth I decided that a round table from CB2 would be perfect for the space. I have also opted for a white table, to make that area brighter and more inviting. Now it seems like the light coming through the window reflects on the table top and make the space welcoming and more specious.

Glam Dining Room

Chic and Glam Dining Area

Most of my living room décor is white as well, so the table blends well with the rest of the apartment space and doesn’t look out of place. Because of the color the living and dining space flow well together while still being well defined. If you have an open plan floor plan, like me you can define your dining or living areas by strategically placing rugs and light fixtures.

What do you think? Do you like the “after” shot or “before”?

My Love of Aqua + New Home Decor!

by Susan

We made it to the end of the week! Hooray! Since I spent last weekend on an “almost-stay-cation” it made this week was a weird one. You know, coming back to your normal routine after there was a wrench in it is always rough. Even if it was a fun wrench.

The house has officially been listed for ten days now. We had two calls and two agent appointments set, yet neither of them showed up! What nerve! Lucky for them we were out of town… If I had rounded up the pets and spent all of last Saturday waiting for them to show up, I really wouldn’t have been a happy camper. The frustrating part of this process (other than forcing the husband and the dogs to keep the house clean 24/7) is that we cannot start building our new, custom home until our current home sells. Unfortunately this waiting period hasn’t stopped me from shopping and dreaming about how I will be decorating our new place! What really fueled this fire (and my pinboards) was when I discovered Minted.

Gals, Minted offers so many beautiful pieces of art AND unique framing options, I don’t know what I’m going to do! Oh, and let’s not forget that they also offer other amazing things like party decor, photo art and even colorful fabrics by the yard! Hellooooo new home decor! So today, for my “5 on Friday” post, I decided to pull my top 5 items from Minted that are totes magotes on my New Home Wishlist.

minted.com wish list // teal and aqua art decor

1 // I’m beyond obsessed with this print!

2 // We are going to have to tell our friends that we moved! I love these announcements. Or these… not sure which I like more!

3 // I can picture this in my beach-y bathroom… Love!

4 // We are totally going to have a housewarming party! How awesome are these party props?!

5 // I LOVE this fabric and can definitely envision it as chair covers or curtains for our dining room!

Quite frankly, if you can’t tell what color I’m currently digging for my new Southern-Inspired Home… you need to get your eyes checked. Is anyone else obsessed with this mint/aqua color for their home to the extent that I am?

Oh - and I definitely need to give a shout out to all my clients and brides out there… if you haven’t checked out Minted’s wedding stationary yet, you should definitely give it a gander! They have everything from Save the Dates to Shower Invites, in addition to their gorgeous wedding invites! At first look I see stationary that would appeal to all of my 2015 brides… everything from rustic and simple to elegant and glam!

Ah, I just love “window shopping” from my computer… Tell me, which piece of Minted art would you like for your home?

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Podcast + Valentine Wreath

by Susan

Happy Celebrate Southern Day! Yup, it’s officially a day on my calendar, so let’s celebrate! First things first, there is a new episode of the Celebrate Southern Podcast LIVE! This week, J and I are discussing MEDIA KITS for bloggers! She is a pro on this topic so I can’t wait for you to listen in! I learned SO MUCH! You can listen along on the righthand side of my blog or right here:

If you want to see the notes for this podcast (or catch up on past podcasts) please click here.

Now how about a fun DIY project, right in time for February 14?

Just in case you haven’t noticed… I absolutely adore wreaths. They add a great touch of southern flair to any naked corner of your home, indoors or out. Yes, I said naked. Giggle giggle. With all of the recent cleaning and packing happening around the house - I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to “decorate” for Valentine’s Day. I decided to just stick with the mantle and then make a cute wreath.

In case you need to check out my wreath resume before proceeding any further into this post, you can see one here, here, and my favorite spring one here!

The best part of this Valentine’s wreath project is that it is really simple and takes very little time. Please don’t feel that just because this lovely, loving Hallmark Holiday is less than a week away that you don’t have time for one last festive project. This project will take you five minutes and really doesn’t even need a tutorial. You just grab your glue gun, your wreath-y supplies, then go crazy!

Supplies:

  • Grapevine Wreath. The wreath I used was buried in my messy craft closet. I bought about 5 of them last year when they were on sale for $3 each.
  • Valentine Ornaments (or Clearance Christmas Ornaments in Valentine-y colors!) I found mine at Walmart for $1.24 a piece… not so shabby right?
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Ribbon (preferably wired ribbon)

Directions:

Pick your pattern and plan where you want to lay your ornaments. Again, super easy. I’m pretty sure even Chloe could’ve made this wreath if I let her use the glue gun. Once you have your color and pattern plan - start gluing! Keep in mind that you need to leave space for the ribbon. (I used leftover ribbon from a Christmas project… I feel like the addition of the ribbon really helps make it pop. Oh, and it’s sparkly so duh.) I have yet to master the “real wreath bow” making. You know, those super gorgeous, loopy ones? So I stick to the simple bow tie. If anyone has tips on how to make beautiful wreath bows - please help a sister out.

Ta daaaa! Here is my finished, 5 minute Valentine Grapevine Wreath. It cost me a mere $5 and can easily be recreated. So get on that… it’s not to late for one last valentine decoration this year!

And because a have a few more cute valentine-y decorations up… heres a little sneak peek of a couple more projects you can easily recreate as well! I love my burlap heart banner and “Love Letters” that are simply covered in scrapbook paper!

What Valentine’s projects did you do this year? Do you have any plans with your significant other this weekend?

As always, thanks for joining stopping by and joining the linkup fun! Let us know what you think about the podcast! Like I said, I found this information extremely helpful and I think you will as well. Now you know the drill - get to it and have a wonderful week!

Big Changes: Why this move will suck.

by Susan

So here’s the thing… while I’m super thrilled about my goal of embracing change this year, last night it all got the best of me and an anxiety attack began brewing.

My husband took the night off work, which meant he was actually home for dinner! In the midst of our “Valentine’s Dinner” (I’m a blogger - we have to celebrate things like this twice sometimes so that I can publish recipes prior to the holiday) I began my mental breakdown. I timidly proclaimed that I wanted to call off this whole selling-of-the-house business and then waited for Michael’s response. After what felt like 10 minutes, he didn’t say no. He just looked at me and simply asked, “Why?” And then I realized that I honestly didn’t know why.

With tears in my eyes I remembered how much I hated this dark house and this crime-laden city when I first moved here. I also remembered how I hated being “so far” from my family and friends (of which most have now moved far, far away anyway.) I remembered the fact that I hate how my feet don’t touch the floor when I sit on the toilets in this house. Weird, right?? I remembered our slab and how I passionately dislike how all the leaves and dirt just roll right in. I remembered the only perk of this city has to offer me - Trader Joes. With all of these negatives, and our dream house waiting for us on the other side, I still didn’t know why I felt like I needed to call this whole thing off.

He then told me I was being silly, gave me a hug and I went to my desk to do a little blogging. When I laid down in bed later that night I prayed and I pondered. This house has come a long, long way. We’ve taken down walls, remodeled the kitchen and replaced the barney-purple carpeting. It’s a nice house, but I’m nowhere near attached to it like I was my townhouse. (Which I still cannot step foot back into because of all the emotions and memories I don’t want to face. Another topic for another day though.)

2 cats & chloe: Formal, flipped living room

So if I’m not attached to the house and I’m finally coming to grips with the fact that I need to begin hoarding food when I shop at Trader Joes… why in the world am I so upset to leave this place?

And then it hit me like a bug on a windshield.

It’s our neighbors. Neighbors who love my dogs more than my own family loves my dogs. Neighbors who are there for me when I need a glass of wine. Neighbors who have loaned me their screened porch during the summers and haven’t judge me (at least to my face) when our Christmas decorations are still up on February 1. Neighbors who have cried more about the “For Sale” sign in our front yard than I have. Neighbors who I will miss terribly. Neighbors that now feel like family.

texts from teenagers

Quite frankly - if we didn’t have the wonderful family across the street, I don’t know if ever would’ve been completely content here. When you work from home and your husband works from 12PM to 12AM - times can get lonely. And having the teenagers across the street catch me up on the Kardashians’ latest shenanigans really can make things better.

But you can’t stay in a house because of the neighbors. Not when you have the opportunity for the slick deal of a lifetime (my mom has developed the neighborhood we will be moving in to and my dad is a homebuilder who will be building for us at-cost…)

Now that I know why I wanted to stay, I think I’m okay with the idea of moving. The family across the street will always hold a special place in my heart. Whether they like it or not, I will be back to watch their girls go to prom. I plan on forcing the wife to become our Nanny when the day comes. And for me, they will forever be one of the positives associated with “Newport News.”

Wow that was long and wordy. Oh yes, don’t think I forgot. I know it’s Friday. And in Blogland, on Fridays we make lists. So to turn this puppy around, how about a quick list of 5 on Friday: The “Pros” of Moving to Suffolk?

five 1

Our new home will be custom designed and built. I’ve looked at a trillion plans, found what I liked, found what I didn’t. Worked with my husband and my mom to create something I think will REALLY work for our family.

five 2

My goal is to incorporate southern charm and coastal living - yet appreciate the fact that our new home will be out in the “country.” This isn’t exact, by any means, but here is the visual I’m working with for the exterior of the home:

Mock up of our house

five 3

When we move, we will be about 30 minutes from my parents. Right now we are an hour away. 30 minutes is far enough that we won’t see them every day, but if we wanted to, we could.

five 4

We will be living on a pretty big chunk of land that gets a great deal of sunshine. Our plan is to build some gardens and possibly invest in Backyard Chickens! I may not be 7 minutes from Trader Joes anymore, but we will have fresh veggies and eggs coming from our backyard!

five 5

We will have more space. (Like we need it… our hoarding tendencies really need to be wrangled prior to this move!) But I will have an office. Like, an actual office! Not a guestroom with a desk! We will also have a screen porch and a kitchen with counter space! Oh, and did I mention the hand-me-down hot tub?

So while it will be really sad to leave our beyond wonderful neighbors and this house that has somehow become a home… Deep down, I know we are making the right decision. Now let’s just rip off the bandaid and get this darn place SOLD!

Thanks for listening to me ramble y’all. TGIF! I’m off to visit my college town and possibly hit the slopes with my family for the weekend!
