Grey and Teal Master Bedroom Reveal

by Susan

T-Minus Four Days… until our house is up for sale! (Horrible timing because I am out of town for three out of four of the remaining days.) Anywho, I’m really proud of how much cleaning and organizing we have gotten done. I barely recognize this place. And I feel guilty if I leave any dishes in the sink. Seriously, who am I?! My husband has been quite the Handyman these days too. We have been spending all of our free time trying to make the house so perfect that someone will want to make it their home… very quickly and at the right price!

Last week I shared our brand spanking new kitchen with you. Go back and check it out. I will wait.

Pretty great right? Today’s master bedroom reveal isn’t quite as new as our kitchen. When I moved in, my husband was living downstairs in the in-law suite, which is now our den. While the upstairs master wasn’t the nicest room in the house, it definitely had potential. Unfortunately this is the only BEFORE picture that he took of the master bedroom:

2 cats & chloe: master bedroom before

Gotta love that yellow right?? Colonel Mustard, in the Master, with the ugly paint job! The previous owners even painted the trim yellow. I don’t want to offend anyone but seriously?! Painting 101 says trim is not supposed to match the paint color. And before any hardwood-floor-police jump all over me… YES! The floors were in good shape. However, my husband’s plan wasn’t to get married… it was to be a bachelor, live in the in-law suite for free while renting out the upstairs of this house. Renters would do a lot less damage if they weren’t dragging furniture across the hardwood floors. Oh my, how that plan changed!

I’m all about some bright colors and fun prints - but I decided that since this is “our” bedroom maybe a grey or blue color would be best. I’m also not a fan of really dark rooms. I like light and fresh! When Michael was stationed in Japan I went a little crazy and we ended up with one darker grey accent wall, with a light grey on the other three walls.

At this point most of my decor is at least a year or two old. I’d say that 75% of it was found at Target. The headboard is ikea and was super cheap compared to most king size headboards. Almost everything else was found at Home Goods. The perfect trifecta when it comes to home decor, in my opinion!

Wanna recreate this look? Here are a few things to get ya started: Teal Comforter or Quilt (similar - but cheaper and I like better!) // Fun Mirrors (similar) // White/Grey Curtains (similar, but again, I like these better…) // Tons of fun grey throw pillows like this one, this one or this fun silver one!

We got the preliminary plans back for our new, custom designed home yesterday. It’s crazy to see my plans, ideas and pinterest boards start to come to life! I have purposefully tried to design our new rooms to be sorta-kinda similar to our current rooms so that I don’t have to go spend a ton of money on new decor. (The house itself is where I want to put my money right now.) But of course there will be SOME new decorations, I’m sure. I’ve only lived in this house for just-under 2 years so I think this grey/teal/white combo will stick around a little longer…

What do you think? Better than the mustard yellow?

DIY Kitchen Reveal

by Susan

The folks who are doing the #2catsWhole30 with me right now probably remember my complaining at the beginning of the month when we started our Whole30. It was time to cook, time to prepare, time to be ready for a big life change!

It was also the time that my husband decided to start our kitchen rehab project. To be fair, we were waiting for a bunch of pieces to come together (i.e. cabinets had to be cut, the base had to be painted, yadda yadda yadda!) and we needed this project done before we snap pics of our house for our real estate agent. February One is just around the corner. It’s good to be almost there.

I apologize for the less-than-awesome pictures in this post. I am almost embarrassed to post them on my blog due to their lack of quality - but it’s all I’ve got. I’m also embarrassed that I didn’t fully stage my kitchen prior to the reveal pictures. #badblogger I mean, if you look closely there’s a pile of dishes hiding in the sink, crumbs in some of the pictures of the new counter tops and don’t even get me started on the trash bag being turned out and showing… Let’s just agree that this is a real life, sneak peek at our new kitchen.

Welcome to my home! If you want to uproot your life and move to good ole Newport News, Virginia - it will be for sale in less that two weeks. 🙂

This was the kitchen before:

2 cats & chloe: Take down the wall to see the kitchen

The pictures above were taken before the wall was taken before the wall between our dining room and our kitchen was completely removed, before we put in new floors, before we redid the cabinets and counter tops, before we added a few new appliances and before we painted.

Here are the after shots:

2 cats & chloe: New kitchen, White cabinets, white granite

2 cats & chloe: White Kitchen Cabinets DIY

2 cats & chloe: White, Grey, Purple Granite 2 cats & chloe: Virginia Cutting Board

(Above) I love this granite. In some of these pictures, due to my lack of skill with this camera, they look a little yellow. They totally aren’t. The granite is white and grey with hints of “cranberry” as they called it at the shop. Personally, I think it’s hints of dark purple, which is my favorite color.

Don’t you love my Virginia cutting board too? You can find it here - as well as plenty of other state options!

I’m in love with our new floors too. They are a simple laminate wood that are easy to clean and great for all the puppy paws and claws that we have sprinting across them daily. I love the color, as it off sets the mostly-white kitchen.

I also love this new faucet… when my hands are gross and eggy, I can simply turn the water on by touching it with the back of my hand! No knobby nonsense necessary! Not sure of the brand, but I’m pretty sure this is exactly what we have.

2 cats & chloe: touch activated faucet

Looking for a way to save soap and display it in a prettier manner than simply in the bright blue bottle it comes in? Use one of these! It drives my family crazy, but it has definitely helped us conserve the amount of soap we go through!

2 cats & chloe: Soap in Oil bottle

The view point from the picture below was taken from the dining room. I love how open everything is now that the wall is gone!

So what do you think?! Big changes right?! Anything you see in these pictures that I need to work on (other than my mess that is lurking in almost every picture) prior to listing the house?

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Making Blog Life Easier

by Susan

I haven’t been this excited about blogging in a long, long time. I’m sure a lot of us are alike… we love it and we hate it. We put in tons of hours and sometimes think “why in the world am I doing this?” The answer is because we love it. We love it a lot.

Sometimes though, we would all just love for Blog Life to be just a wee bit easier, if at all possible. I mean let’s be real - most of us are juggling so many things that a helping hand of any sort would be welcomed with open arms. Am I right ladies?

2 cats & chloe: Making Blog Life Easier - The Celebrate Southern Podcast

I’m super happy to announce that Episode TWO of The Celebrate Southern Podcast: The Bloggers’ Podcast is live today! Yes siree! J and I want to thank each and every one of you who listened to our first episode! We received a ton of great feedback and support from y’all - and quite frankly it means the world to me. Starting a blog is one thing… you can’t hear me. I can backspace and retype. All of my moments captured can be completely staged. This is not so much the case when it comes to a podcast. You guys put up with every “um” and “awesome” and blip-up that we both stuttered through. Don’t worry - practice makes perfect. And while I start episode two by immediately saying “um” and “awesome” in the same sentence and J didn’t know how to use her mic for the first 5 minutes of Episode Two - I think the content is terrific and will hopefully be right up your alley, no matter what your blogging niche is!

Episode Two (that is currently only available on our blogs, but as of next week you will be able to stream directly from iTunes!) is all about making Blog Life easier. We gab about everything from helpful apps, calendars and where/how we work as bloggers. You can listen in here:

And since a blog post is pretty lame without pictures, today I wanted to share a quick project that helps me keep my house life organized. (Since, like we chat about in the podcast above, an organized life totes magotes helps me when it comes to staying organized with my blog life and my work life.)

This is my menu board. I try to keep it up-to-date every week. Especially when I’m doing a whole30 (or in my current situation, a whole60!) When I plan my meals out ahead of time, I know exactly what groceries I will be needing and what food prep needs to be done.

2 cats & chloe: DIY Weekly Menu Planner

Like what you see? You can easily recreate it! This project took me all of 5 minutes and some gold spray paint! Here’s what you need:

Alphabet Letters // Gold Spray Paint // Vinyl Chalk Board {similar} // Chalk

Please please please let me know what you think about Episode Two! Cheers and Love! Happy Monday!

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Home Map Decoration

by Susan

As the Christmas decorations are packed back up in large plastic boxes for another eleven months and the tree lays curbside… I find myself looking around semi-cluttered home {I’m honestly not sure if we are hoarders or if we are just lazy} thinking it looks pretty drab now that the holiday festiveness is gone.

Additionally, as a professional planner, I have been finding myself organizing all sorts of calendars, weddings and appointments for 2015 - all while wondering what adventures and vacations the year will have in store for me.

2 cats & chloe: pin the countries you travel to, gift for traveler, DIY home decor 2 cats & chloe: DIY home decor for a traveler

Three years ago my husband made me an extremely heavy DIY map. You see, I had fallen in love with the idea of pinning. Both on pinterest and in real life. I had seen this idea hanging in one of my college roommate’s house. I casually mentioned the idea to my at-the-time boyfriend {aka my future hubs.} We found a map that we both liked, with the intent of one day making a decorative DIY map. Years went by and this project was pushed aside. Then out of the blue, when I was expecting an engagement ring for Christmas, he gave me this giant world map. {The ring showed up a month later.}

2 cats & chloe: how to decorate with maps

Unfortunately due to moving and the actual size of the ginormous map - we didn’t hang it until this past year. While I wasn’t really too keen on having it in our living room, we really didn’t have a wall big enough to fit it anywhere else. Turns out, I love it exactly where it is!

2 cats & chloe: DIY Map Decor

This DIY world map decoration is such a fun way to document and record the many places we have been. My pins are obviously pink. His pins are blue. And the yellow pins are for places we have both visited.

It took some debating when it came to the “rules” behind the pins. Like, if we have both been to a city/country but maybe not together, is it yellow or do we need a separate color? And when it comes time for kids, do we pick a new color for family travel? Does a layover count? Is there a minimum amount of time you have to be in a country to receive a pin? Or what about country verse state vacations? That last one was kind of a free for all because most of the places we have been to are cities/states and on a map this size, it’s just way too hard to decipher the exact pin location.

2 cats & chloe: DIY gift for travelers

Want to make a map like this for yourself? Here is what you will need:

  • A map. We went with a classic look like this.
  • Pins. I wanted all white. And the longer the pin the better.
  • Washi tape for the flags. I went with a narrower tape.
  • Cork for behind the map.
  • A frame (or you could make one yourself like my husband did!)
  • Glue. The type you use depends on if your map is laminated or not. My map isn’t laminated - but I almost think it would’ve been better if it had been. You can see some bubbles in mine where the glue dried funny.
  • Note: You could also make this on a smaller scale… maybe you aren’t a world traveler, so consider one from your own country. And while ours is awesome, and visible from Mars, you do not necessarily have to do one this big!

I love sitting on my couch and glancing up at this awesome map. The colors are perfect and the memories are outstanding. Now I just need to work on getting a few more pins in some of the “empty” spaces. Bring it on 2015… bring it on.

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: A Southern Christmas Home Tour

by Susan

Seriously - let’s just take five seconds to breathe. Can you believe that Christmas is THIS WEEK! Holy guacamole - when, how, why, wait.. what?! I cannot even grasp where this year has gone. I swear, as I get older, time just flies by quicker and quicker. I assume that my grandmother must sneeze and it’s a new year.

It’s time that I joined BlogWorld and bring you a mini-version of what most of you have been posting recently: these beautiful, creative, Christmas home tours. Here are a few shots of festiveness that you will find around my house… Hope you enjoy!

My wedding wish tree all dressed up for Christmas with my Beach Christmas Village underneath it…

2 cats & chloe: How to reuse your wedding wish tree 2 cats & chloe: unique christmas tree 2 cats & chloe: Christmas Church in Village

(Above) I love the church in this village. It weirdly looks just like the church we got married in! Glitter and all!

(Below) We have this very awkward “fireplace” room in our house. Every other time of the year I just breeze right through it. But as Christmas arrives, it becomes the prettiest room in our home. Our tree is covered in ornaments that we have collected through all of our travels. I have been picking up an ornament on every vacation or country/state I have visited for the last 10ish years. It really makes decorating the tree a very special thing, remembering past adventures and wonderful memories.

Notice my newest decorative piece this year… do you see Rudolph over the mantel? Cute right?!

2 cats & chloe: how to decorate a live tree 2 cats & chloe: Rudolph over mantel 2 cats & chloe: southern style and decorated christmas mantel

Since our official tree isn’t actually in our den, I have this tiny one, that I purchased in 9th grade, all decked out next to my blanket ladder. Notice the gum drop garland?! I think they are so fun!

When I was on vacation many years ago in San Antonio, TX, I found this stained glass Nativity Scene. It’s not large, by any means, but I think it is so cute and unique.

2 cats & chloe: Stained Glass Nativity Scene

And no Christmas is complete with out bags and bags of brand new, neon yellow tennis balls under the tree. Surprisingly, the k9s haven’t even messed with them yet. Fun Fact: If you want to drive a border collie crazy, drop 15 tennis balls in the room at one time. It’s the closest thing we can get to herding sheep…

2 cats & chloe: What to get your dog for Christmas

I decided to go a bit rustic with my tablescape this year… I found these super cute reindeer {one is wearing a bow tie while the other is wearing a normal tie… because deer always need to look dapper} and then paired them with a couple gold and white striped taper candles, a few poinsettias and my metal center piece that I bought at a Swiss Christmas Market two years ago. When my advent candles are lit, you see the houses cut into the rusted metal.

2 cats & chloe: Festive reindeer tablescape 2 cats & chloe: advent candles 2 cats & chloe: German christmas decoration

And because no blog post is complete without a cute puppy picture… man I wish she would stay this size forever:

Now join the fun! Link up with J and me! Show us your southern inspired posts! Looking for a theme? Think Christmas, Crafts, DIY, Fashion, Foodie Amazingness, or even a southern city you have visited or live in! I would LOVE to see how Christmas is celebrated around other southern cities!
