My Love of Aqua + New Home Decor!

by Susan

We made it to the end of the week! Hooray! Since I spent last weekend on an “almost-stay-cation” it made this week was a weird one. You know, coming back to your normal routine after there was a wrench in it is always rough. Even if it was a fun wrench.

The house has officially been listed for ten days now. We had two calls and two agent appointments set, yet neither of them showed up! What nerve! Lucky for them we were out of town… If I had rounded up the pets and spent all of last Saturday waiting for them to show up, I really wouldn’t have been a happy camper. The frustrating part of this process (other than forcing the husband and the dogs to keep the house clean 24/7) is that we cannot start building our new, custom home until our current home sells. Unfortunately this waiting period hasn’t stopped me from shopping and dreaming about how I will be decorating our new place! What really fueled this fire (and my pinboards) was when I discovered Minted.

Gals, Minted offers so many beautiful pieces of art AND unique framing options, I don’t know what I’m going to do! Oh, and let’s not forget that they also offer other amazing things like party decor, photo art and even colorful fabrics by the yard! Hellooooo new home decor! So today, for my “5 on Friday” post, I decided to pull my top 5 items from Minted that are totes magotes on my New Home Wishlist.

minted.com wish list // teal and aqua art decor

1 // I’m beyond obsessed with this print!

2 // We are going to have to tell our friends that we moved! I love these announcements. Or these… not sure which I like more!

3 // I can picture this in my beach-y bathroom… Love!

4 // We are totally going to have a housewarming party! How awesome are these party props?!

5 // I LOVE this fabric and can definitely envision it as chair covers or curtains for our dining room!

Quite frankly, if you can’t tell what color I’m currently digging for my new Southern-Inspired Home… you need to get your eyes checked. Is anyone else obsessed with this mint/aqua color for their home to the extent that I am?

Oh - and I definitely need to give a shout out to all my clients and brides out there… if you haven’t checked out Minted’s wedding stationary yet, you should definitely give it a gander! They have everything from Save the Dates to Shower Invites, in addition to their gorgeous wedding invites! At first look I see stationary that would appeal to all of my 2015 brides… everything from rustic and simple to elegant and glam!

Ah, I just love “window shopping” from my computer… Tell me, which piece of Minted art would you like for your home?

Big Changes: Why this move will suck.

by Susan

So here’s the thing… while I’m super thrilled about my goal of embracing change this year, last night it all got the best of me and an anxiety attack began brewing.

My husband took the night off work, which meant he was actually home for dinner! In the midst of our “Valentine’s Dinner” (I’m a blogger - we have to celebrate things like this twice sometimes so that I can publish recipes prior to the holiday) I began my mental breakdown. I timidly proclaimed that I wanted to call off this whole selling-of-the-house business and then waited for Michael’s response. After what felt like 10 minutes, he didn’t say no. He just looked at me and simply asked, “Why?” And then I realized that I honestly didn’t know why.

2 cats & chloe: Updated Dining Room to Kitchen View

With tears in my eyes I remembered how much I hated this dark house and this crime-laden city when I first moved here. I also remembered how I hated being “so far” from my family and friends (of which most have now moved far, far away anyway.) I remembered the fact that I hate how my feet don’t touch the floor when I sit on the toilets in this house. Weird, right?? I remembered our slab and how I passionately dislike how all the leaves and dirt just roll right in. I remembered the only perk of this city has to offer me - Trader Joes. With all of these negatives, and our dream house waiting for us on the other side, I still didn’t know why I felt like I needed to call this whole thing off.

He then told me I was being silly, gave me a hug and I went to my desk to do a little blogging. When I laid down in bed later that night I prayed and I pondered. This house has come a long, long way. We’ve taken down walls, remodeled the kitchen and replaced the barney-purple carpeting. It’s a nice house, but I’m nowhere near attached to it like I was my townhouse. (Which I still cannot step foot back into because of all the emotions and memories I don’t want to face. Another topic for another day though.)

2 cats & chloe: Formal, flipped living room

So if I’m not attached to the house and I’m finally coming to grips with the fact that I need to begin hoarding food when I shop at Trader Joes… why in the world am I so upset to leave this place?

And then it hit me like a bug on a windshield.

It’s our neighbors. Neighbors who love my dogs more than my own family loves my dogs. Neighbors who are there for me when I need a glass of wine. Neighbors who have loaned me their screened porch during the summers and haven’t judge me (at least to my face) when our Christmas decorations are still up on February 1. Neighbors who have cried more about the “For Sale” sign in our front yard than I have. Neighbors who I will miss terribly. Neighbors that now feel like family.

texts from teenagers

Quite frankly - if we didn’t have the wonderful family across the street, I don’t know if ever would’ve been completely content here. When you work from home and your husband works from 12PM to 12AM - times can get lonely. And having the teenagers across the street catch me up on the Kardashians’ latest shenanigans really can make things better.

But you can’t stay in a house because of the neighbors. Not when you have the opportunity for the slick deal of a lifetime (my mom has developed the neighborhood we will be moving in to and my dad is a homebuilder who will be building for us at-cost…)

Now that I know why I wanted to stay, I think I’m okay with the idea of moving. The family across the street will always hold a special place in my heart. Whether they like it or not, I will be back to watch their girls go to prom. I plan on forcing the wife to become our Nanny when the day comes. And for me, they will forever be one of the positives associated with “Newport News.”

Wow that was long and wordy. Oh yes, don’t think I forgot. I know it’s Friday. And in Blogland, on Fridays we make lists. So to turn this puppy around, how about a quick list of 5 on Friday: The “Pros” of Moving to Suffolk?

five 1

Our new home will be custom designed and built. I’ve looked at a trillion plans, found what I liked, found what I didn’t. Worked with my husband and my mom to create something I think will REALLY work for our family.

five 2

My goal is to incorporate southern charm and coastal living - yet appreciate the fact that our new home will be out in the “country.” This isn’t exact, by any means, but here is the visual I’m working with for the exterior of the home:

Mock up of our house

five 3

When we move, we will be about 30 minutes from my parents. Right now we are an hour away. 30 minutes is far enough that we won’t see them every day, but if we wanted to, we could.

five 4

We will be living on a pretty big chunk of land that gets a great deal of sunshine. Our plan is to build some gardens and possibly invest in Backyard Chickens! I may not be 7 minutes from Trader Joes anymore, but we will have fresh veggies and eggs coming from our backyard!

five 5

We will have more space. (Like we need it… our hoarding tendencies really need to be wrangled prior to this move!) But I will have an office. Like, an actual office! Not a guestroom with a desk! We will also have a screen porch and a kitchen with counter space! Oh, and did I mention the hand-me-down hot tub?

So while it will be really sad to leave our beyond wonderful neighbors and this house that has somehow become a home… Deep down, I know we are making the right decision. Now let’s just rip off the bandaid and get this darn place SOLD!

Thanks for listening to me ramble y’all. TGIF! I’m off to visit my college town and possibly hit the slopes with my family for the weekend!

A Susan-Sized-Ikea-Trip

by Susan

The day started like any other… An awkward job “meet and greet,” traffic in Northern Virginia, and ikea.  And let me tell you, ikea was not ready for us.  Or so we thought.  We came prepared and on a mission.  We showed ikea who the bosses were.
And then ikea kicked my credit card in the boo-tay.

Welcome to my kitchen!  How many I assist you?!

Is anyone else overly impressed by the teeny tiny, yet totally awesome kitchens, bedrooms, closets, offices and overall sweet spaces that is somehow created in this magical square castle called ikea?  Pretty positive I could use the kitchen below to start my own paleo cooking show!

Like I said, we went with a mission.  A mission to make my kitchen at my new home nicer and user-friendly.  Well, I guess not so much friendly.  More so just useable.

The bottom line:  I need more counter space.  And this Swedish hunk of furniture is my solution.  The cute bar chairs and all!

As we wrapped up the part of the store tour that a human could easily live in, my mom was a bit flabbergasted that we were almost done.  I mean really Mother, we were only there for about 2.5 hours!

It took the two of us, a flatbed cart, some logistical planning and the weight of my entire body for us to pick this butcher block thing up.  Heavy duty doesn’t even begin to describe it.

And then I had to reorganize my goods and begin pushing like a lady about to give birth to 123 pounds of ikea furniture.  It took everything in me to get this flatbed to the checkout without:

  • A.  Letting my super sweet lanterns (that Michael will also love - compromise decor is tough for us) fall off the cart and break
  • B.  Run it into a giant rack of other ikea-loveliness or
  • C.  Take out the snarky lady that yelled at my mom when my mom simply tried to help her.
Scratch that, I totally meant to hit Mrs. Snarky McSnarkerson.

When we left HRVA we were both slightly concerned about taking Pretty Prius.  My mom swore up and down that there was no way I could fit a Susan-Size-Ikea-Trip into my tiny, but efficient Pretty Prius.  She definitely had junk in her trunk, but Pretty Prius pulled through for me!  We probably could’ve even fit the shoe cabinet I really wanted in there also!

I’m officially convinced that my Prius is the second cousin, twice removed, to Mary Poppins’ bag.

We made it home!  Now it’s time to start building!  And time to start making my next Ikea Road Trip Shopping List.  Hint hint:  This headboard is at the top of the list!  (And no, it’s not $999! I swear!  At that cost I’d be going to Pottery Barn and swooping up the bed frame I REALLY want.)

To those of you who live near an ikea… do you have problems with this store?  Is there an ikea-obsessed-anonynmous group you can check yourself into?!  Thankfully I live a solid two point five hours away from this glorious motherland of swedish bargain furniture.  Otherwise we’d have serious issues.  My obsession with Target wouldn’t even begin to compare to the problems we’d have if ikea were in my town.
They say God doesn’t put things in front of you that he knows you cannot handle… because Jesus knows I do not have the will power to handle an ikea that is any closer than 143 miles of my home.
   (Yep, I google mapped it.)

Bloglovin and Bloggers I Love

by Susan

I had the desire to “redecorate” around here last night… It’s definitely a work in progress.  I’m hoping that the time spent in changing things around the blog will help keep me here.  I’m pretty positive that blogging helps relieve my stress and forces me to use my creative juices.  Juices that would much rather take a nap or watch Everybody Loves Raymond on Netflix.  However, said juices rank would much rather blog than do something crazy like train to run a 5k…

Note to self: Do not sign up for a 5k when you haven’t run since they forced the mile upon you in grade school.

Due to the disappearance of Google Reader in just a few short days, I needed to find another outlet to follow my blog friends.  I’m pretty positive the end of Google Reader isn’t a bad thing.  (Don’t get me wrong, it still sucks.)  But I had so many people on there that I followed in hopes of winning a one-time giveaway or because the blogger had a trillion followers and I caved to the good ole “the cool kids are doing it” notion.  So goodbye Reader and goodbye to the hundreds of blog-reads that just overwhelmed my Reader Box.  It’s time to start fresh.

So I picked Bloglovin.  For anyone out there who has used this - what do you think?  Will I get used to it?  I handpicked my first 20 blogs to put into it in hopes of keeping it manageable.  Manageable = I will  actually read the posts.  Or at least that’s the plan.

Any-hoo!

I spent some time yesterday surfing around Blog-Land, catching up on all my old friends.  It’s pretty funny… as I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and I truly believe that God has put certain bloggers in my path.

In the midst of all my crazy life’s changes there’s a handful of bloggers that have been there for me, emailing and texting and checking in as if we were ‘real life friends.’  I’d give them all shout outs and say GO READ THEIR BLOGS but I’m pretty positive that due to my infrequent blogging, I’ve lost all my readers.  In my mind, this post right now is more or less a “dear diary” kinda thing I suppose.

I simple thanks, and a let’s “catch up” over blogging tea is due to some of my faves: Jessica, Lesley, Jenn, and Gesci.   Be expecting a few more comments on all of your old posts from me.  🙂

As I was reminded again last night, blogging also happens to be an awesome method of procrastination.  My new house is still quite the hot mess.  I actually texted the picture above to Jessica last week as we both just moved and we are both struggling to get unpacked.  I’m better cut it all off now and get to work…  Happy Tuesday!

Burger Bar & Birthday Celebrations!

by Susan

I wanted to do a quick post before I head out to share with you the excitement that was yesterday and all the birthday festivities that went down!

The day started with a sprinkle donut from my godmother slash painter, followed by a crap ton of tunnel traffic on my way to try on my wedding dress!  Yes, the dress is in!  Yes, it is early!  And yes, it fits!  We may have a little bit of altering in the future but thank goodness it’s nothing major!  🙂

I happily stopped by Home Goods (since it is 3.4 seconds from my dress shop and about 1.3 hours from my new house…)  I picked up a few more goodies for the wedding at a bargain deal!
After swinging by the office for some cake I headed back to the Peninsula to get the house ready for the party!  I was so excited to have people come by the new place to see all the work that has been done to it and to grill out for my birthday!
I decided I needed to have a Birthday Burger Bar!  Honestly, I wanted steak and veggies for my birthday but when I realized how many people were coming I knew I couldn’t afford to feed everyone delicious steak… so burgers it was!  And to be quite frank - burgers are rarely my thing.  I needed to think of a way to make them awesome… and let me tell you… having a DIY Burger Bar with a ton of toppings was quite awesome!
The concept was quite simple… pick your bread, pick your protein, pick your toppings, stuff your face. Done and done.

We had a ton of options for burger toppings.  Pickles, Cheeses, Lettuce, Tomato, Pineapple, Onion, Bacon, Jalapeno, and Guacamole.  I had two types of buns: the norm and then the delicious potato rolls.  We had four types of protein to suit everyone’s different diets: Chicken, Veggie Patties, Turkey Patties and Beef Patties.

We definitely had quite the spread!  I think everyone could find SOMETHING they liked.  AND the best part - if you wanted to eat Paleo you totally could!  Since it was my birthday I caved and had cake and a potato roll.  It happens.

Michael surprised me all the way from Japan with a cute little patio set!  I added some color and we had everything ready!  With a couple of tables and a bunch of chairs there was plenty of space for everyone!
These two lovely ladies came from RVA to have dinner with me!  The silver lining of now living in Newport News, Richmond is only an hour away!  I have a feeling that will lead to some fun dinner dates more often!!

My sister baked one of my favorite cakes.  It a Mandarin Orange Pineapple Cake.  I will have to share the recipe one of these days.  And yes - there are 29 candles on that cake.  Frankly I was surprised the smoke detector didn’t go off!  Why the sideways look?  Here’s what you don’t see in this picture…
Little Kinsley really wanted to get some cake for herself!!
We stayed up drinking and eating and socializing past my bedtime but it was well worth it!  This morning I had the last of the cake for breakfast (it has fruit in it so it’s a-ok right?!) and skyped with Michael as my body kicked into too-much-sugar-recovery-mode.
Time for me to pack up and head to the southside because tonight Leslie is taking me to see the Lumineers!  I’m pretty pumped!  Talk about an awesome birthday!
Hope you all had a lovely June 11th as well.  xoxo
