How to Build A House: Update #2

I will say y’alls reaction to my last house update was pretty great. It absolutely warmed my heart to know that even though my blogging has become (temporarily) less frequent that so many of my blog friends are still out there. And that I can trick you with a “We are Four Weeks Along!” subject line! #gotcha!

I held off on a second update because there was a slight, week long, delay this past week. But I guess that is just par for the course? Hopefully we do not experience too many delays though. I would be over-the-moon thrilled if we could be in by the end of the year, even though we have been told January-February-ish. #PrayingForAChristmasMiracle

CURRENT MOOD: I’m okay as long as I am “removed” from the situation. My dad (our builder) asked me last week if my plan was to just not visit the jobsite until the house is finished? I realized I had not been by since things really started. Being away just made it easier at the time since being there did not give me anymore control over the situation. (I cannot help it that I am a control freak - I can only cope with it!)

CURRENT CONTRACTORS ON SITE: The brick man and foundation guys were out there last week. The framers began working late Friday and will be the primary contractors on site for the next few weeks. (From what I understand.)

NUMBER OF JOB SITE VISITS: Twice in the last two weeks.

WHAT SUZ THINKS: I really, really, really would love to be in by the end of the year. I just want to decorate my own home for the holidays…

WHAT MICHAEL PROBABLY THINKS: I really hope this framer knows what he is doing!

WHAT OUR BUILDER (i.e. MY DAD) PROBABLY THINKS: Why isn’t Susan out on the jobsite more often? I really hope she is kidding about wanting to be in by Christmas…

2 cats & chloe: Build a House: We have floors - sorta!

LATEST DECISION WE HAD TO MAKE: Today I had to decide if I wanted round or square columns on the front porch (round has always been the plan) and the side porch… and then the screen porch in the back of the house. I ended up deciding that since the front porch has round columns (hello gorgeous, southern porch) that the side porch, also visible from the street, should match. Then, to save money, as much as I would love round columns on the back screen porch… normal, cheap, nothing-fancy posts are just fine.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED THIS WEEK: Footing alone can make your house look small… hopefully by adding the floors and walls it will feel a bit bigger…

I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO: Walking through the house on a real floor and experiencing each room! It really is so cool to see the plan that I helped design come to life!

I’M NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: Making quick decisions without a lot of time to ponder and prepare.

PREDICTED MOVE-IN DATE: He is still saying February…

Over the next week or so I want to try to swing by the lot as much as possible. While I really appreciate all of my husband’s pictures - I think it would be so cool to snap a daily, or at least weekly, image from the same exact spot. It would make a really cool flip book in the end!

Have you built a house before? What features would you want in your home if you could build it from scratch?

I KNOWWWWW!!! I am obsessed with porches and if I could live outside I probably would. This evening when I was out there, I discovered that our front, wrap around porch will have THE PERFECT view of the sunset! I am so excited! How have you been doing?? I have not had any time to catch up on blogland! I miss reading about all the things you’re up to!!
