Stages of Building a New Home: It’s still happening…

November 30, 2015 by Susan 2 Comments

Oh my gosh! It has been SO LONG since my last house update. Sadly, I had to cut the blogging back to a few times a week (because of work, the holidays and the fact that I still feel pretty crappy almost all the time with this virus we lovingly call pregnancy!) But the house is coming along! Who knew there were so many stages to building a new home?? I am thrilled every time I go out to the job site and see something, anything, done. Or at least one step closer to done!

2 cats & chloe: Stages in home building

CURRENT MOOD: Excited, but kind of sad. I’m excited because we are almost to the phase of building where I get to begin picking out the “pretties” of the home. You know, things like light fixtures, cabinets, carpets and colors. Why am I sad? The realization has hit that Lorelei will probably be here before the house. As much as I was really praying for a Christmas miracle - I am now praying to have more than one single day in the house before the baby arrives. The jury is still out if we will be needing to find temporary housing closer to our building site and the hospital…

CURRENT CONTRACTORS ON SITE: The brick layer is finished. The framer is done! The plumber has done all the of technical stuff. The electricians are almost done. The HVAC contractors are wrapping up the upstairs this week! Next week, after we pass a couple of inspections, we will happily welcome the siding guys and the drywall team!

NUMBER OF JOB SITE VISITS: I have been visiting the site once a week. Michael has been out there several times a week along with every single weekend from 8am to sunset.

WHAT SUZ THINKS: It’s almost time for me to play along in this building process! I cannot wait to see how this comes together! And I hope it happens SOON!

WHAT MICHAEL PROBABLY THINKS: I hope the systems are the most efficient that they can possibly be…

WHAT OUR BUILDER (i.e. MY DAD) PROBABLY THINKS: Why in the world did I agree to do this? There isn’t enough Jack Daniels in the world to get me through the rest of this job.

LATEST DECISION WE HAD TO MAKE: Apparently, the few weeks prior to Thanksgiving, we were stalling while my husband tried to make some decisions on the HVAC system. In the end, it did cost us some extra time but hopefully we can make it up over the next month or so. (And hopefully it doesn’t snow much this winter to delay us even more!) I am also in the process of deciding which light fixtures I want to use and where we can cut corners to save some extra pennies.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED THIS WEEK: Being stuck between you husband (an engineer) and your father (the home builder) is really a terrible place to be. Also, men can put crap behind them much quicker than women can. Also, building a house, while pregnant, is not for the faint of heart.

I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO: Drywall and siding. And decorating the nursery.

I’M NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: Moving while 9 months pregnant. Let’s finish this house up tomorrow, mmmk?

PREDICTED MOVE-IN DATE: It has now been pushed somewhere between End-of-March and mid-April. #WompWomp

So what do you think of the progress? When this is all said and done - who wants to come join me for champagne during sunset on our amazing wrap around front porch??
