Wedding Details: Classic Glam with a Dash of Fun

by Susan

It’s Wedding Wednesday friends!  And as it appears, my attempt at this series has been a bit under par.  I mean, we are months and months beyond November 9, 2013.  But my schedule is crazy.  It’s all quite fickle actually.  So I’m going to count every other Wednesday as a success!

On my last Wedding Wednesday I showed you all the fun we had pre-wedding.  Today I am going to give you a glimpse at SOME of our details.  As a professional wedding coordinator, nothing was more important to me than little details.  Each and every deet had it’s place.  And there’s absolutely no way that one blog post can capture all of my wedding’s details, big and small.

So let’s tackle this beast.

No offense, but I am very anti traditional guest books.  I have more than enough photo albums and scrapbooks lying around, collecting dust from high school.  Albums that I just can’t part with.  I knew that I would never ever open up a book to read the names of folks who came to our wedding.  I wanted something creative.  Something I would like to look at.  Something that would look awesome in our home.  So I made this:

Outside of our reception hall we had a Generations Table.  The dress furtherest on the left is my dad’s mother’s dress, next is my mom’s mother’s dress (also the one my mom wore!) and the dress on the far right is my mother-in-law’s wedding dress.  Scattered on the table are photos of our parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents on their wedding days.

Remember how I like to do things differently?  Our escort cards were homemade party horns!

Guests were greeted at their seats with this card.  One side was the menu, one side was a welcome note. {I totally stole the script for this note off of pinterest.  Sorry, I can’t find the original source.}

Notice the table linens?  The Chamberlin (our venue) supplied the ivory linens.  And I was too much of a cheapskate to rent fancy overlays.  So I went to Michael’s Craft Store and purchase champagne gold tulle.  It was stunning!  {And ensured that all guests left covered in glitter! Whoops!}
Every little detail was important to me.  Even the chair sash tie.  Despite the fact that I was a child of the 80s, I hate bows.  And I wanted something different.  I was giddy over the fresh look of this eggplant purple sash tie on the gold chiavari chairs.

Favors {loose leaf tea and a heart tea infuser} were at each place setting.  Name cards were just plain purple business cards that I hand wrote everyone’s names on.  They were held up with gold glitter clothes pins {that were homemade, of course!}

As long as I’m telling you everything I’m against, I might as well mention that I hate plain-jane ballrooms.  I love character.  I love southern flair.  I love windows and chandeliers.  I love a large dance floor. I love different sized tables mixed with booths.  The Chamberlin in Hampton, Virginia offered all of the above.
Another huge perk was that I had never worked a wedding in this venue.
Making it even more special for my own wedding.

Did I mention that some of my tables had sticks as table runners?  Yup.  They did.

Along side of our non-traditional guest book, I wanted to have a wish tree.  A place for our guests to write us notes, wishes and marriage advice.  By the end of the evening this tree was packed with hilarious tid-bits that we will treasure forever.

And the cake.  Let me just tell you!  Holy Statement Cake.  I googled many-a-cake but it didn’t matter.  I had a vision.  And luckily, I work with one of the best cake people in Hampton Roads {Cake Delights} and she made my vision come true!  With a fondant shell, and a dash of glitter here and there, this four tiered cake was perfect.

I could probably go on for hours, reminiscing on all of our wedding details.  Sadly Amazingly this post doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the way-to-many tiny details I had scattered throughout the day for our guests.  Was it a bit over board?  Yeah, maybe.  Did it make me happy?  Definitely.
I wanted our wedding day to embrace southern but classic glam, with a dash of fun.
I think I did an okay job at that.
My suggestion to anyone who finds themselves in the midst of planning their own wedding:
Do what makes you happy {but fits in your budget!}  Don’t worry about what tradition says you have to have or have to do.  It’s your day.  Make it something that represents you and your significant other.  Make it something that makes you happy.

Oh, and hire a wedding planner.  She will help keep you sane and help you along the way.  Even if you are a DIY-er.

For the love of too many details and way too much glitter!
Until next time…
