Yesterday I talked about how the seasonal transition from Winter to Spring brings fun, bright colors and sunshine. This new season also brings another thing: thunderstorms. Most of you probably don’t even think “Ah, Spring is coming and so is lightning!” But I do. Fifteen years ago I was struck by lightning. As I get older and the years pass, I am further removed from the accident, yet there is an intrinsic fear deep down in me of thunder and lightning. While I’m not nearly as bad as I used to be (I used to have severe anxiety attacks at the sight of a dark cloud) I still go into immediate curl-up-into-a-ball mode when storms roll in.

This past Thursday, at 4AM, the first huge thunderstorm of the year rolled through. Lucky for me I was already curled up in the fetal position underneath the blankets! I clung to my husband and I clung to the one verse that pops into my head during every single thunderstorm: Matthew 8:26.

I LOVE this verse because I feel like Jesus is speaking directly to me, every.single.time. It’s like He is taking my face into his hands and saying “YOU - SUSAN!!! I know you’re curled up in a ball and terrified, but we go through this every time it storms. Remember, I’ve got your back. You just have to trust. Why do you have such little faith?” It sets me back from the situation. It makes me think. It reminds me I’m not alone. It humbles me.
