I have gone back and forth about my “Monday Moments with Nana” idea. I feel like there is a fine line between offending either you, my reader, or Nana - if she ever learns about my blog, as it technically is accessible via “the google.”
A lot of the things she says are absolutely worth documenting. I honestly never know what to expect. Conversations will range from hilarious, random thoughts to sometimes offensive but spoken with a caress and charm that is missing from our generation, to real life advice that I think all of us can appreciate.
That being said, I’m 31 and I’m living with my grandmother. You better believe that if I’m not laughing, I probably crying! So why not do what every good blogger would do and document this phase of my life?!
With Michael gone for a few more weeks, Nana and I are learning to adjust to each others’ schedules. Monday is the day that she reads her book and watches Fox News. Every other Tuesday is nails. Every other Wednesday is hair. Every other Thursday is Bridge with the gals. And one Friday a month she joins a bunch of women for “Lunch Bunch.”
Television is always a topic of discussion and something that we apparently have to schedule into our days, believe it or not. I have learned that there are very few shows that we both like… While she is obsessed with Fox News and “The Little Couple,” I prefer to spend my free time watching Law & Order: SVU, Gilmore Girls or train-wreck-reality-shows like Teen Mom. Beyond the fact that I do not want to explain who Janelle is and why she is a hot mess, I feel like the respectful thing to do is give your elders control of the remote.
To avoid really uncomfortable generational gaps, most of the time we simply rely on a few of the neutral shows that we can both enjoy together: Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Family Feud with the occasional episode of The Golden Girls, Say Yes To The Dress or Modern Family.
That being said, here is a snapshot of how tonight’s television conversation went:
Oh that’s that show with a lot of people right?? Yeah, this an okay show but they could really do with getting rid of a few characters.
Pause.
They are all good. But there are just too many of them. No show really needs this many characters…
…You know, I will tell you which person I do like! That big gay guy! But you know he is not gay in real life, right? The red head is the “naturally gay” one.
This, after last week’s question: Suzie, if two men are married… which one is considered the wife?
Time for me to roll on upstairs to “The Bat Cave” to watch The Bachelorette Finale without having to explain the love triangle between Kaitlyn, Shawn and Nick…
