Phase One of Don’t Become A Hoarder

January 13, 2012 by Susan 1 Comment

Treasures!  I found absolute treasures!  Before you judge me, remember how the saying goes: One man’s trash is another’s treasures.  And boy did I find some treasures!

As my resolution post stated, 2012 will be the year I de-clutter.  Or at least give it a good shot.  I can’t promise you the world, but I really do want to give this a fighting chance.  Today I started small.  I decided to tackle a bag and a box of stuff that my mom wanted out of her house.  I moved out ten years ago, but I still had some stuff in my closet and in my bathroom.  Time to clear it out before she threw it out!

I started with jewelry boxes.  You know, those ones from when we were all kids… goodness only knows what we used to define “pretty” then.  I am so thankful my taste in jewelry has changed.  Although, Michael would probably prefer it if buying me a mood ring would be enough to rock my world!

I started with my musical jewelry box.  Despite the fact that the ballerina’s skirt has begun the dry rotting process and no longer stays on her, the box still plays “Somewhere over the Rainbow!”  I also went through a couple other boxes with kittens on them.  Yes, I was that girl.

Okay, maybe the saying should be rewritten… Some of one man’s trash should, and definitely is, everyone else’s trash too.  I found my retainer from elementary school!  Whoa trash pile!  However, some of the other treasures I found I had a hard time parting with.  I mean, come on… a troll ring, the Babysitter’s Club official necklace, a smily face with a santa hat necklace, and a golden horse necklace that came from a book about a golden horse necklace!  These things are all classics!  Should be worth millions of dollars right?!

As you see below, I did set aside quite a bit to give to the thrift store.  I just couldn’t justify tossing things that some little kids may absolutely love.  Yes, that is a rabbit’s foot you see in there… Who in the world decided that would be cool?  So gross.

Okay, now for the REAL treasures I found.  I was so excited about this find that I barged into my roommates room to show her!

I found this cute, pink, flowery box with a broken lock on it.  Either my little sister was really good at breaking into secured, cardboard boxes with cheap plastic locks on them, or I simply lost the key and broke into it myself.  Inside I found a wad of old papers.

My cousin and I have always been close despite the fact that we have ALWAYS lived on separate continents.  Before the days of the internet, emailing, and blogging (oh yes, and I am watching her son grow up via skype) we wrote letters and mailed pictures to each other.  The joy I have in the fact that I found 38 letters from her is astonishing!  According to the international stamps they date all the way back to August 7, 1990.  LOVEEEE thissss!!

Even when computers became popular we still snail mailed each other letters.  I love how she probably worked so hard typing this letter up, only to color in all of the circles and handwrite some more on the paper. :)  I also love that she talks about how proud she was that I saved $20 to come visit her in Switzerland!  Ha!

I think this is the coolest thing.  I am going to have to create a book or something with them.  I would hate to lose these again!  It really made me think though, in the future, it won’t be nearly as cool to sift through thousands of emails to see what we rambled about.  And when I say “sift” I mean Gmail Search “Kirsten.”  I am pretty sure I will begin writing letters to her again…. just to have letters to find and read again when I am sixty.
Wonder if she has a stash of “Suz Letters” stuck in a box somewhere…..
xoxo.

December Recap!

January 5, 2012 by Susan Leave a Comment

Blogging… turns out to be more like a job sometimes. I love it though. Even though I spent 2011 with a follower count of a whopping 9, this is still my space to be me, share my projects, and all the goings-on in my life!  I have made it one of my goals to actually attempt at growing my blog this year.  Any advice on this?  Since I got pretty slack (not to mention sick for a couple weeks) towards the end of the year I decided I can’t let the new year go any further without doing a holiday recap! (Plus I know my aunt in Switzerland does love the photo updates!)

My holiday festivities began with the 3rd Annual JMU Christmas dinner in Williamsburg!  It is always great for all of us to get together and chat over a delicious meal.  This year we decided to go to a place called Food for Thought.  The food was great, but the wait time was HORRIBLE, even with a ‘fast pass’ reservation.  Normally I take a few pictures of all of us, and have the waiter take one or two of the group, but this year that didn’t seem to happen.  So how about a couple shots of an adorable one year old eating a lemon instead?!  Sounds like a fair trade to me!  (This was actually Claire’s second year joining us!)

We had our usual progressive dinner the week before Christmas too. I just love going from house to house, seeing everyone’s decorations, eating their food, and spending quality time with some of the people I love the most!  This year the route was mapped out a little better than past years.  We started with Appetizers at Jean & Lou’s house, Salad at my parents house, Dinner at Bob & Teresa’s house, Dessert at Nana’s house, and then Drinks & Gifts at my house!

The week before Christmas I was invited to attend the Governor’s One on One Christmas Program in Hertford, NC.  It is always great to see how much the program grows every year, not to mention how many great kids are involved in it!  This year was a special year though.  They did a little tribute to my grandfather (who started the organization) and to my grandmother, Narnie, for always being supportive.  It was really touching to see all the hard work the kids put into the presentation for a lady they didn’t even know.

Christmas was nice this year!  My roommate invited me to church with them the week before the holiday. I really needed that.  It helped me get into the spirit of the season even more.  A couple days before the holiday I packed up my jeep and my walkie talkies then headed up to Northern Virginia.  Walkie Talkies you ask?  Michael and I caravanned up there.  They worked out GREAT as we spent most of the day stuck in traffic on 64 and 95.  It was a nice couple days up there though.  I finally got to meet his sister and her family, and spend some time with some of Michael’s friends too.

I drove home on Christmas Eve.  Somehow it only took me 2 hours and 55 minutes to get from Alexandria to Chesapeake!  Apparently I was going at the speed of reindeer!  Christmas was quite in my parents house this year, but it was nice.  We had a nice (PALEO!!) Christmas Eve dinner, watched a couple movies and headed to bed at a decent time.  The next morning we did the normal gift opening thing.  I got several nice things this year!  Pearls from Michael, and a smorgasbord of things from my family (see the pink hat with the light below?!).  After unwrapping it was time for Christmas Breakfast!  Half of it was paleo friendly… the french toast casserole… not so much. :)

Oh! And a few Christmasy photos from around my house this year…

My favorite -EASY- project of the season!
Caitlin & Chloe in their Christmas Jammies!
My mantel all dressed up for the holiday!
My neighbor’s Charlie Brown Christmas Tree that I LOVED!
The real tree that Caitlin and I picked out, carried home, decorated, and loved all season!

So there ya have it friends and family!  I may be a couple weeks late, but you got your Christmas recap!  Stay tuned tomorrow for the New Years recap!  It includes winning a lot of dollar bills, fishing in ski clothes and cooking a paleo meal for my entire family! :)

Favorite Holiday Traditions…

December 16, 2011 by Susan Leave a Comment

I assume we all have our favorite holiday traditions.  You know, the ones that if they don’t happen for some reason, the holiday season is just a little “off” and not quite the same.  Whether it’s baking cookies, or volunteering, or listening to Christmas music, or going to a ton of parties with friends and family - they are all important and special.  However, there is still that one thing… that one thing that reminds you that yes, in the midst of all the chaos and shopping, it really is Christmas.

My “thing” is hanging lights at my parents house with my dad.  This activity has taken place for years and years.  I can’t even remember when we started, but I can tell you what trees we started with (because two of them are gone due to hurricanes, and the others have grown so much that the light count has increased drastically!)  When I was young, it was my dad, my sister and I out there.  A year or two into the tradition, Leslie stopped helping.  She would work on decorating inside with my mom while I faced the elements and worked outside with my dad.

My dad and I started to get a bit competitive about things.  The pride we had in this job grew each year.  We wanted our yard to not only look the best, but be seen when you turn into the neighborhood.  We would drive around making sure our trees looked the best, and that we draped the lights just right.  Because of this, I am pretty sure there is a ‘Clark Griswold Complex’ that runs in the family.

Yesterday was the day.  Luckily it was the nicest day we have had in a while with a temperature of 67 degrees.  As we were decorating I was snapping pictures with my retro cam app to post and share.  I did not have a chance to go over to their house last night to see the finished product lighting up the neighborhood, but when I do I will snap a pic and add it to this post at a later date!

The trick is to roll up the lights on newpapers… makes the hanging efficient and helps you reach higher limbs by chucking the roll up in the air and hoping it catches!  Some of these papers are 10 years old… they have served us well. :)

Yes, the chucking method is great until the paper gets stuck… then you need the ladder… (below)

(Below) My dad was on a 5 foot ladder and I was on one taller that was at least double the height, looking down on him.  Pretty sure it was the tallest ladder we have had to use in all these years!  Not sure what we are going to do when these trees get much bigger!

The small tree/bush thing above is usually the last stop for us.  It doesn’t stand with the other trees, but it still gets two strands of lights over by itself.

Below is a photo of our happy helper this year, Chloe, with the HUGE magnolia tree behind her.  The magnolia started out as a weed-looking thing (which I learned yesterday, my dad tried to kill it numerous times, thinking it was a weed, before he learned my grandparents planted it there without telling him).  It started small, and now it is almost as tall as the pine trees around the yard.  From that monster magnolia, he has started growing 3 others.  The coolest thing is that all of them started with my grandfather’s tree.  Hopefully when I get a house with a bigger yard I will also be able to take some seeds from this tree and plant it!

And last but definitely not least - this photo got 8 “likes” on facebook yesterday so I figured I would throw it on here.  Chloe thought she was a great help and she definitely enjoyed having the run of the yard for a couple hours while we worked!

Dad, you taught me everything I know about exterior illumination.

Yes, I rapped at a wedding!

November 28, 2011 by Susan Leave a Comment

To be truthful - it took me 2 months to get up the nerve to actually upload this video from my camera! Most of you know that I do wedding planning on the side, and that it takes two hands to count the number of times I have been a bridesmaid or maid of honor. I have done numerous toasts and speeches, but it wasn’t until Jessica’s wedding in September that I had the nerve to actually rap my toast!

Before I get into the details, let me tell you a bit about this girl… she is hilarious, bubbly, fun, beautiful (inside and out) and would probably do just about anything for me. Even though we have spent most of our friendship with half the country between us, it somehow pressed on and I think we both know that we will always have each other’s backs in a moment’s notice - even if we look like Dumb & Dumber fools, wearing flippers walking down the beach in the Bahamas together!

She has surprised me NUMEROUS times - like when she randomly showed up at my high school graduation, or when she popped out of the back of the best praline store in Charleston while my boyfriend and I were vacationing down there! So I felt like it was time for me to surprise her in return!

A couple days before I flew up to Minneapolis to help her prepare for her wedding I messaged the Best Man on facebook to see if he was on board with my plan. Luckily the best man was her brother, who feels like a brother to me as well. It made it so much easier to throw my crazy idea to rap at her wedding out there…

Jess and Alex are incredibly fun people. And the Kirk family doesn’t do anything the ordinary way. So when I asked Brian if he wanted to rap with me his response was “SUZ YOU’RE A GENIUS!!”

I watched a TON of youtube videos of other folks rapping wedding toasts. Most of them actually rapped to the Fresh Prince song. I probably should’ve done that, because now, every time I hear “Ice Ice Baby” I start singing “Jess and Alex.” I can’t take all the credit though for my rapping lyrics. I did snag a few lines from those who previously rapped toasts. So many thanks go out to those people! :)

Anyway - I am pretty sure Jess was surprised! I actually asked her the day before her wedding, in a joking manner, if it would be okay for me to wear rapper bling at her wedding. She probably thought I was kidding - and then - I did this… :)

Much love goes out to Jess and Alex! (And my partner in crime, Bri!) Ya’ll are great sports! Hope you enjoyed my awful, ahem, I mean AWESOME rap skillz! (Because it was the first and last time that will happen!) XOXO!

Riverfest 2k11 - Part 1

July 21, 2011 by Susan Leave a Comment

Again - I am still trying to play catch up from my month of blogging vacay… so HAPPY RIVERFEST and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

This past Fourth just so happened to fall on the Second Annual Riverfest.  Every year for the past six years my college friends and I have all gotten together to celebrate something at the river.  The first four years were strictly girls only (minus the occasional fake stripper).  {and yes, Amanda, I just googled to see if it was spelled “stripper” or “striper” lol}  Last year we decided to open the weekend up to the boys as well - and so began “Riverfest.”

Riverfest 2k11 (which actually had it’s own hashtag on twitter) fell on the weekend that included both my mom’s birthday and Fourth of July.

To celebrate my mom’s birthday, my friends and family were great sports and helped me throw a surprise 70s themed party for her.  When she got home from working at the cafe on Saturday July 2nd (her birthday is actually July 3) we were all waiting for her in a house that, well, was quite disco-y.

I would say she looked surprised!

Delicious “Disco” Cuppies!
We had a dance floor, disco ball,
and even “dancers” in the windows!
There is no such thing as Riverfest without crazy outfits!  Almost everyone was a good sport and happily took part in this… I won’t mention any names of those who despised this part of the weekend.

Two of my faves came to the party in their
finest apparel!

Riverfest 2k11 continued on for two more days after the birthday party.  It was quite nice to have all of my college buddies in the same town within one weekend.  Sadly, not everyone could make it on the same exact day.  Better start planning for next year!   Check back tomorrow for Riverfest 2k11- Part 2 to see a few more photos from the weekend and our Fourth of July celebrations in small town Hertford!
