CELEBRATE SOUTHERN PODCAST: Editorial Calendars for Bloggers

January 26, 2015 by Susan 20 Comments

Before I begin, I just need to tell you that I am so stinkin’ excited about this post! I was that kid who was so excited to go back to school for one simple reason: school supplies! I can’t even begin to describe my love for new calendars, sticky notes and mechanical pencils. If it were cool for adults to still carry around Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers - I’d be all up in that nonsense. I keep telling myself though, that Erin Condren and her amazing planners are the Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers of today. And that makes my heart happy.

2 cats & chloe: Editorial Calendars for Bloggers // Erin Condren Planner as Blogger Editorial Calendar

Celebrate Southern: Podcast on Blogging - Editorial Calendars

I’m pretty biased but today’s Celebrate Southern Podcast is terrific. J and I teamed up to chat all about our editorial calendars: How we use them, why we use them, and how to stick with them. We both agree that having blogging editorial calendars makes our blogs so much more successful and easier to manage. In the podcast I share a bit about how I use mine, and J talks to me about how I need to stick with all of the plans and posts that I schedule in my blogging editorial calendar.

As you listen along you will hear me reference what I do to stay organized and on track with my editorial calendars. I mention in the podcast that this WAS NOT originally my idea. Nina from Flowers In My Hair did a post about her editorial calendar back in the fall and I fell in love with her amazing calendar methodology. It was one of those moments in my life when, I swear to God, a lightbulb went on. Her idea to use color-coded sticky notes is beyond brilliant. And I owe her so much for the sanity and organization that this post gave me.

I am a huge fan of anything that is colorful… which was part of my attraction to Nina’s idea. And it just makes sense. I use a different color sticky note for each topic so that I never have two of the same colors next to each other. Throughout the podcast I reference what my calendars look like. My descriptions may have become a little wordy so J specifically asked for pictures of my life calendar, editorial calendar and my digital gCal version. You can see below in the pictures, how this works for me, with both my digital gCal version and my paper calendar version.

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Where’d ya go January?

January 19, 2015 by Susan 17 Comments

Can you believe that we are in the last stretch of January? Guys - I still haven’t gotten my 2014 2015 resolutions in writing! (Expect that next week… better late than never right?)

But seriously, I don’t know where this month has gone. I have been so busy with work and the #2catsWhole30 that my days are just zooming past me. Before I realize it I will be wrapping up my whole60 and wondering what’s next!

A couple of weeks ago I posted something on my personal facebook profile that was along the lines of this: “Once I wrap my Whole60 I will be off to galavant around the world. Come on March!” Those two sentences, paired with an announcement of my next big trip to Europe (more on that in upcoming posts as well) got a ton of likes and a few comments. There was one comment that really stood out to me though: “Life is short Susan. Do not wish it away.”

While life is zooming past me in all sorts of crazy directions right now, this was a lovely reminder. I need to be present. I need to appreciate and enjoy the day for what it is. I need to (try to) respect all this chaos, knowing it won’t last forever. I need to cherish the rare evenings I have with my husband and the random days that I get to spend with my family and friends. Yes, March is going to be a really exciting month for me… but I shouldn’t wish away the days I have right now.

2 cats & chloe: January, winter, tree

I know, this isn’t the most crafty, delicious or fashionable post for the Celebrate Southern Linkup - but I adore these monthly posts. (I kidnapped this idea from Kelsey, btw.)

Here is my January:

EATING // Whole30 approved foods like this, this and this! (YES! Hot wings are approved!!)
DRINKING // Lots and lots of sparkling water. Huge plus if the glass includes these cran-cubes!
PRACTICING // Organizational skills. Time to pack up this house and get ready for the next!
MASTERING // Creativity in the kitchen and loving it.
LEARNING // that even though I love clean eating, I really need to start exercising sometime soon… bleh.
PLAYING // the Wicked soundtrack on repeat. More specifically this hilarious song from the show.
FINISHING // our house projects! It’s only taken a few years… Eeek!
PLANNING // a trip to Switzerland!
READING // nothing really right now… I’m open for suggestions!
WATCHING // House on Netflix. I used to love that show. Just restarted it and I’m hooked. Gotta love someone who is snarkier and whittier than myself…
WALKING // around the neighborhood is what I SHOULD say…
WEARING // boots, boots and more boots. But I am especially loving these.
COOKING // clean eats. I’m almost half way through this Whole60! I can do it!
WORKING // from home A LOT and pondering a new “standing” desk. How great would that be?
TRAVELING // no where fun this month… but next month and the month after that? Whole different stories!
WANTING // our house to sell really quickly so that we can begin building our new, custom designed, dream home. While it will be sad to leave our wonderful neighbors and this close proximity to Trader Joes, we just have to pull that band-aid off and GO!
CELEBRATING // the fact that this is a new year with new opportunities!
What has your January looked like? Anything exciting happening in your life right now? I want to know!

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Making Blog Life Easier

January 12, 2015 by Susan 18 Comments

I haven’t been this excited about blogging in a long, long time. I’m sure a lot of us are alike… we love it and we hate it. We put in tons of hours and sometimes think “why in the world am I doing this?” The answer is because we love it. We love it a lot.

Sometimes though, we would all just love for Blog Life to be just a wee bit easier, if at all possible. I mean let’s be real - most of us are juggling so many things that a helping hand of any sort would be welcomed with open arms. Am I right ladies?

2 cats & chloe: Making Blog Life Easier - The Celebrate Southern Podcast

I’m super happy to announce that Episode TWO of The Celebrate Southern Podcast: The Bloggers’ Podcast is live today! Yes siree! J and I want to thank each and every one of you who listened to our first episode! We received a ton of great feedback and support from y’all - and quite frankly it means the world to me. Starting a blog is one thing… you can’t hear me. I can backspace and retype. All of my moments captured can be completely staged. This is not so much the case when it comes to a podcast. You guys put up with every “um” and “awesome” and blip-up that we both stuttered through. Don’t worry - practice makes perfect. And while I start episode two by immediately saying “um” and “awesome” in the same sentence and J didn’t know how to use her mic for the first 5 minutes of Episode Two - I think the content is terrific and will hopefully be right up your alley, no matter what your blogging niche is!

Episode Two (that is currently only available on our blogs, but as of next week you will be able to stream directly from iTunes!) is all about making Blog Life easier. We gab about everything from helpful apps, calendars and where/how we work as bloggers. You can listen in here:

And since a blog post is pretty lame without pictures, today I wanted to share a quick project that helps me keep my house life organized. (Since, like we chat about in the podcast above, an organized life totes magotes helps me when it comes to staying organized with my blog life and my work life.)

This is my menu board. I try to keep it up-to-date every week. Especially when I’m doing a whole30 (or in my current situation, a whole60!) When I plan my meals out ahead of time, I know exactly what groceries I will be needing and what food prep needs to be done.

2 cats & chloe: DIY Weekly Menu Planner

Like what you see? You can easily recreate it! This project took me all of 5 minutes and some gold spray paint! Here’s what you need:

Alphabet Letters // Gold Spray Paint // Vinyl Chalk Board {similar} // Chalk

Do you have a fun, southern inspired post? Join the fun below! Link up any post (new or old) about a southern inspired craft, DIY, fashion, recipe, a city, a vacation spot or even you furbaby! I can’t wait to see what y’all have to share this week!

Please please please let me know what you think about Episode Two! Cheers and Love! Happy Monday!

CELEBRATE SOUTHERN: Home Map Decoration

January 5, 2015 by Susan 35 Comments

As the Christmas decorations are packed back up in large plastic boxes for another eleven months and the tree lays curbside… I find myself looking around semi-cluttered home {I’m honestly not sure if we are hoarders or if we are just lazy} thinking it looks pretty drab now that the holiday festiveness is gone.

Additionally, as a professional planner, I have been finding myself organizing all sorts of calendars, weddings and appointments for 2015 - all while wondering what adventures and vacations the year will have in store for me.

2 cats & chloe: pin the countries you travel to, gift for traveler, DIY home decor 2 cats & chloe: DIY home decor for a traveler

Three years ago my husband made me an extremely heavy DIY map. You see, I had fallen in love with the idea of pinning. Both on pinterest and in real life. I had seen this idea hanging in one of my college roommate’s house. I casually mentioned the idea to my at-the-time boyfriend {aka my future hubs.} We found a map that we both liked, with the intent of one day making a decorative DIY map. Years went by and this project was pushed aside. Then out of the blue, when I was expecting an engagement ring for Christmas, he gave me this giant world map. {The ring showed up a month later.}

2 cats & chloe: how to decorate with maps

Unfortunately due to moving and the actual size of the ginormous map - we didn’t hang it until this past year. While I wasn’t really too keen on having it in our living room, we really didn’t have a wall big enough to fit it anywhere else. Turns out, I love it exactly where it is!

2 cats & chloe: DIY Map Decor

This DIY world map decoration is such a fun way to document and record the many places we have been. My pins are obviously pink. His pins are blue. And the yellow pins are for places we have both visited.

It took some debating when it came to the “rules” behind the pins. Like, if we have both been to a city/country but maybe not together, is it yellow or do we need a separate color? And when it comes time for kids, do we pick a new color for family travel? Does a layover count? Is there a minimum amount of time you have to be in a country to receive a pin? Or what about country verse state vacations? That last one was kind of a free for all because most of the places we have been to are cities/states and on a map this size, it’s just way too hard to decipher the exact pin location.

2 cats & chloe: DIY gift for travelers

Want to make a map like this for yourself? Here is what you will need:

  • A map. We went with a classic look like this.
  • Pins. I wanted all white. And the longer the pin the better.
  • Washi tape for the flags. I went with a narrower tape.
  • Cork for behind the map.
  • A frame (or you could make one yourself like my husband did!)
  • Glue. The type you use depends on if your map is laminated or not. My map isn’t laminated - but I almost think it would’ve been better if it had been. You can see some bubbles in mine where the glue dried funny.
  • Note: You could also make this on a smaller scale… maybe you aren’t a world traveler, so consider one from your own country. And while ours is awesome, and visible from Mars, you do not necessarily have to do one this big!

I love sitting on my couch and glancing up at this awesome map. The colors are perfect and the memories are outstanding. Now I just need to work on getting a few more pins in some of the “empty” spaces. Bring it on 2015… bring it on.

You know, looking back, 2014 was just an “okay” year. There really wasn’t anything in particular that jumps out at me that made this year an extraordinary year. Celebrate Southern Bloggers Linkup

Not too shabby of a year right? Yes it was mediocre but it was a pretty good mediocre.

So how about that big news I promised… Nope - I’m not pregnant. {I’m pretty sure once you get married, every time you say you have “big news” an angel loses its wings in disappointment when you reveal that you’re not pregnant.}

So the big news: J from Bless Her Heart Y’all {And A Hot Southern Mess} and I have decided to continue to grow Celebrate Southern, with a PODCAST! That’s right, we may be a wee bit cray, but at least we have gone off the deep end together! We will continue to host the weekly Celebrate Southern Linkup, but twice a month we are going to have a link to our podcast for you to enjoy!
