Say What Saturday?! Tell me about your Christmas Tree!

December 13, 2014 by Susan 6 Comments

I LOVE this time of year, mostly because of all the traditions. As we get older, get married, move, have kids {or in my case, puppies} things change. I had breakfast this morning with one of my best friends who recently moved to Florida but was back in town for the weekend. {<—-Click that link and read that post. I know I’m biased but it was a pretty great post.}

Over our Bloody Mary’s and bacon, she and I discussed her first Christmas “away from home” {home being Virginia, where we have lived our entire lives.} She will spend this Christmas with her boyfriend, in their new home, Florida. When I asked if she was excited for the holiday, she shared such joy for all of the new traditions they are starting. Rather than saying something like “I’m really going to miss being here with my family…” she has totally embraced the holiday and the positives of spending it in Florida with her man and pups, probably wearing flip-flops and a tank top.

On our 16 hour car ride to Florida in September, when we were talking about all the changes she would be facing, I remember asking her, with a slight panic in my voice, “Do they even sell real Christmas trees in Florida?!” After living with Cait for many years, I was well aware that she always enforces the “real tree” rule. That became our tradition. An excellent one if I do say so myself!

We would borrow someone’s truck, and then she and I would go out to the tree lot, spend almost an hour examining all of the trees, looking for the perfect one. When I asked if they sold real Christmas trees in Miami, that was the only time I think she thought “Oh helllll no, I’m not moving to Florida!” I quickly googled it and found a lot that sets up within 2 miles from her new home - and we continued on our way to the Sunshine State.

With that story - I bring you this week’s Say What, Saturday!? What is your tradition? Do you do a live christmas tree or an artificial tree? Do you have any traditions that are connected to buying or finding your tree?

Meet these Bloggers: Liz from I Heart Vegetables // J from A Hot Southern Mess // Brooke and Erica from Pumps and Pushups // Samantha from It’s All in the Details

I have pushed this new tradition on my husband. While he acts like he hates it, I believe he secretly loves the full hour that I force him to wander a tree lot. {He tried to limit me to 15 minutes this year, but I negotiated a solid 30, full of exuberant tree gawking.} We ended up with a very fat “fluffy” tree this year. I love how, with live trees, they look different each year.

And as a very bad blogger, I don’t have a full Christmas House Tour to show you… so I’m going to show you our semi-naked tree, strung with homemade popcorn garland. {We are decorating it with ornaments tomorrow, don’t worry!}

    Artificial for me, I had a real tree one year and I grew tired of finding pieces of it on my floor. Much easier to haul away and box an artificial one lol

      I have one artificial and one real one… the perk of the fake one is no pine needles…. :) Merry Christmas dear!

    I had a real tree only one time and the needles it was letting were enough for me to learn not to get another live tree again. We are having a white tree this year. One that I have been wanting to get since I was a kid. Have a look at my recent post http://glamistahome.com/2014/12/tips-on-christmas-tree-decorating.html I like that it’s a rather un-traditional tree during a holiday season full of traditions. :)

    What a cute story! Before we had our son, we were artificial tree kind of people too, just because they’re easier. But, now that we’ve started the tradition of cutting one down, it just wouldn’t seem like Christmas without taking the trip to the tree lot!

    I love your fat tree Susan.
    I’m a real tree girl myself, despite being allergic, it’s a tradition I just can’t give up.
    We’ve got an artificial tree in Australia this year… but that’s only because someone purchased it for us, and its very hard to find real trees around here.

    Looks like the house is all ready for Christmas!
